WP4 – Geohazards, Environmental Management and Geothermal Energy
Overview
WP4 addresses key natural and anthropogenic risks affecting African societies, including geohazards, environmental impacts of mining and the development of geothermal energy as a sustainable resource.
Scope and Activities
Training covers the identification, assessment and mapping of geohazards such as landslides, floods, erosion and seismic hazards. Environmental management of mines focuses on monitoring, mitigation and rehabilitation practices. Geothermal energy components address both shallow and deep geothermal resources, including exploration methods, utilisation options and environmental considerations. Field-based case studies and practical exercises are integral parts of the programme.
Capacity Building Approach
WP4 adopts a multidisciplinary approach, combining theoretical instruction with field and laboratory work. Training promotes risk-informed planning and supports the integration of geoscientific knowledge into environmental and energy policies.
What the Work Package Delivers
The work package strengthens national capacities for geohazard risk reduction, improves environmental management of mining activities and enhances expertise in geothermal energy development.
