WP1 – Geoscientific Mapping
Overview
Geoscientific mapping is a core function of Geological Surveys and provides the spatial framework for land-use planning, infrastructure development, mineral and water resource management, environmental protection and natural hazard mitigation. WP1 builds on experience gained during PanAfGeo-1 and PanAfGeo-2 and responds to strong demand from African Geological Surveys for harmonised and advanced geological mapping skills.
Scope and Activities
WP1 addresses the complete geological map production workflow, from data preparation to final outputs. Training covers indoor preparatory and interpretation phases, including coordinate systems, projections, cartographic standards, mapping tools and the use of remote sensing data. Field-based training focuses on geological mapping methods, lithological and structural interpretation, and supervised mapping exercises conducted in small groups. Participants are trained in field data collection, data processing, geological interpretation, cross-section construction, legend design and digital map production during two weeks of fieldwork on mapping polygons. Embedded topics include lithology, mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics, GIS and practical digitisation techniques.
Capacity Building Approach
Training follows international geological mapping standards and combines classroom instruction, fieldwork and hands-on exercises. Each trainee prepares a Return-to-Work Plan to apply newly acquired skills within their home Geological Survey through national mapping programmes or applied thematic projects. Networking between mapping geologists across Africa is a special benefit.
What the Work Package Delivers
WP1 strengthens the capacity of African Geological Surveys to produce high-quality, standardised geological maps and explanatory materials necessary for understanding and governing their natural resources such as minerals, water, soil, and underground spaces, and their changes over time. It supports improved decision-making, stronger natural resource governance and enhanced cooperation between African and European geological surveys.
