WP5 – Geoheritage and Geoconservation
Overview
Africa hosts exceptional geoheritage and geodiversity, much of which is under increasing pressure from development and environmental change. WP5 supports the identification, protection and sustainable use of geoheritage resources.
Scope and Activities
Training addresses concepts and methods in geoheritage and geoconservation, including inventory, assessment and mapping of geosites. Legal frameworks, protected area management, geotourism, education and community engagement are key components. Best-practice guidelines and case studies are developed and shared.
Capacity Building Approach
The programme combines classroom sessions, fieldwork and engagement with local stakeholders, promoting cooperation between Geological Surveys, communities and heritage authorities.
What the Work Package Delivers
WP5 enhances the protection and sustainable management of geoheritage, increases awareness of its value and potential use, and strengthens links between science, society and policy.
